Urnes Stave Church

Urnes Stave Church sits majestically on a hill, just after arriving by ferry from Solvorn.

The church is the oldest stave church in the world, built in 1130, and is on UNESCO's list of special monuments.

You will have an interesting guided tour where you get to know the history and decorations of the church. Perhaps most famous is the North Portal, which originally stood in an earlier church, built in 1080. Here the battle between good and evil is illustrated with unique carvings, well preserved for almost 1000 years!

This is one of the major attractions in our area and is well worth a visit.
The nearby café is open during the summer season.
