In the heart of the Sognefjord, you'll find some of the most magnificent mountains in Norway: Breheimen, Jostedalen and Sognefjellet. Hiking in the fjord landscape is characterized by good trails in a green and lush landscape, with mighty waterfalls and panoramic views.

1. MOLDING  

4 hours round trip **

Favorite!

Molden, 1116 m above sea level, is located on a peninsula jutting out into the Lusterfjord. Stølen Svarthiller is located halfway to the top, a nice resting place with views of Urnes and the Sognefjord. Magnificent views at the top to the fjord, Jostedalsbreen and the peaks of Vest-Jotunheimen. Driving time: 20 min.

2. MØRKRISDALEN

Many consider Mørkrisdalen to be one of southern Norway's most beautiful valleys, one of the few major untouched watercourses in Western Norway. The tour starts at Hødnavollen and you follow the path that leads towards Arentzbu in Breheimen. After the magical Tjødnaholet, you pass Dulsete and from here the trail follows the mighty waterfalls up to Liane. The landscape changes constantly, from grassy open plains to narrow gorges where the river pushes its way through. Driving time: 35 min.

3. JOSTEDALEN: BERGSETBREEN AND NIGARDSBREEN

Favorite!

Easy hike into Krundalen towards Bergsetbreen. This is almost a vertical glacier drop that hangs down the mountainside from Jostedalsbreen. An idyllic valley and a mighty spectacle!

You can continue on to Nigardsbreen, perhaps the district's biggest attraction. You can get right up to this glacier by boat across Nigardsvatnet lake. Those who wish to do so can join a guide up the glacier. The day can end with a visit to the Breheim Center, which provides insight into the history of the Jostedalsbreen glacier over several thousand years. Driving time: 40 min.

4. NAVARSETE-HEGGDALEN

2 HOURS T/R *

Easy hike into the lush Engedalen valley, to Nes Gard's Navarsete hut (now a self-service DNT hut). The T-marked trail continues inwards to Heggdalseter, along a river with many fine rapids and small waterfalls. The hike can be extended up to Heggdalsvatnet. Driving time: 20 min.

5. VIGDAL - VIGDALSTØL

2 HOUR TOUR *

Vigdalen is a side valley to Jostedalen, and the drive up to the starting point Vårstølen is an experience in itself. A gentle climb up to Vigdalstøl (45 min.), where the trail runs along beautiful waterfalls. Continue over Vigdøla and past the Breidsete area back to the starting point. At the end, you enter the trail from Dalsdalen, Bispevegen, the former main access to Jostedalen.

6. ENGEDALEN- SPRING MOUNTAIN

5 HOURS ROUND TRIP ***

From the parking lot in Engedalen, walk inwards to Navarsete. Continue to Heggdalseter and up to Heggdalsvatnet, where you walk along the mountain ridge to the top of Vårfjellet. Beautiful moss-covered terrain and from the top there are panoramic views of the Jostedalsbreen glacier and the Lusterfjord. The hike ends downhill in easy terrain to the parking lot. A rare and varied round trip! Driving time: 15 min.

7. VIGDALEN - NAVARSETE - ENGEDALEN

5 HOURS ***

One of the finest hikes through Breheimen, from Vårstølen in Vigdal to Navarsete.

Transportation from Nes Gard up to the starting point can be arranged. Hike in a beautiful cultural landscape up towards Fivlenosi, passing the Fivla tourist cabin along the way. Continue along a good path, with panoramic views of the Jostedalsbreen glacier, all the way up to Lodalskåpa. After passing Heggdalsvatnet lake, you descend into the lush Engedalen valley. 15 min drive back to Nes, pick-up can be arranged. Driving time: 50 min.

8. AUSTERDALSBREEN

5 HOURS ROUND TRIP ***

A varied and exciting road trip through Hafslo and along Veitastrondvatnet to Tungestølen. Here the hike starts towards Austerdalsbreen, described by W.C. Slingsby as "The finest ice-scenery in Europe". Slingsby as "The finest ice-scenery in Europe". The trail leads gently into a wide, open valley in a magnificent mountain area. On the return journey, you can stop in Veitastrond, known for its excellent homemade goat's cheese.
Driving time: 1 hour.

9. FJELLGÅRDEN BIRD HIDE

3 HOURS T/R **

After a short drive, you start from Fortun, along a good path, up to the Fuglesteg shelf farm. The name gives an indication of a mountain farm that is located high and airy! There are many fine viewpoints along the way.
The main building is one of the few houses in Norway built with two-storey stone slabs. The house has recently been restored and used as a self-service tourist cabin. Light refreshments in the summer season. Driving time: 30 min.

10. SOGNEFJELLET

5-HOUR TOUR ***

Nice car trip along the Lusterfjorden to Skjolden. From Fortun begins the climb up to Sognefjellet, the highest mountain pass in Norway, 1400 m. Great views from several stops along the way.

From Sognefjellshytta, follow the marked trail south towards Skogadalsbøen, with sweeping views of Jotunheimen and Fanaråken. Halfway along the trail, turn north towards Krossbu/Sognefjellshytta, along Smørstabbreen.
Driving time: 1 hour 10 min.

11. SKJOLDEN - KINNFOKFJELLET - LUSTER

6 HOURS ****

A magnificent trip with a view of the fjord and Hurrungane in Jotunheimen. Steep climb up from Skjolden, above the tree line the hiking terrain becomes gentler to the top of Kinnfokfjellet, 1406 m

The descent to Børesteinen (pictured) is steep in places down to the Berge farm and the center of Luster, but always with fantastic views of the Lusterfjord.

12. FEIGUMFOSSEN

1.5 TIME * 

A rare experience, with proximity to Feigumfossen during the ascent. By car via Skjolden to the starting point, where you follow a marked path to the foot of the waterfall. Feigumfossen has Norway's second highest free fall at 218 metres.
